Mr Mathew Tobin

Senior Lecturer in Education: Primary English with Children's Literature

Mat Tobin teaches English and Children's Literature in Primary ITE and both the Primary PGCE and the 3-7 Early Years PGCE. He also teaches Early Children's LIterature on the undergraduate degree in Early Childhood Studies and leads several modules on the MA/PGCert in Education with a focus on Imagination and Creativity and Children's Reading. Since joining Brookes in 2014 after 16 years of Primary teaching in Oxfordshire, Mat has been asked to deliver several keynotes across the UK on Reading for Pleasure, Picturebooks and Engaging pupils in the reaeding and writing process. He has research interests in children's literature and the Reading for Pleasure agenda.

Research

Mat is currently working alongside fellow colleague, Nick Swarbrick on two projects. One on the sentient landscape (exploring the work of Alan Garner), and one on fatherhood in picturebooks. 

He is interested in taking his research further with regards to supporting families at home with Reading for Pleasure and exploring the importance of access to high-quality texts to help improve motivation and engagement for both parents/carers and their children. 

Mat is also interested the representation of diversity in children's literature and has focused on the the role of vernacular architecture in books published in the UK and their depiction of homes throughout the world.
